About Harbourside

Harbourside is a four-storey residential block located at the mouth of the Black Oak River as it flows out into Clew Bay.  It comprises 32 private apartments, mostly of two bedrooms, but with some larger, three-bedroom apartments on the ground floor.

The block is located a short walk from the small town of Newport,  a thriving local town with shops, pubs and other services. Harbourside opened in 2002, having been constructed on the site of a former seaweed factory.

History of Harbourside

The Clew Bay seaweed factory was opened in 1969. Seaweed, or 'wrack' as it was known,  was harvested from all around the shores of Clew Bay and transported by tractors and trailers to the factory for processing. The milled dried weed was bagged and exported to Scotland where it was used in the production of a variety of goods including cosmetics and medical products. The factory closed in the 1980s and the building stood empty for some years before it was demolished to make way for Harbourside. Stone from the factory building was incorporated into the facade of Harbourside.
